Too Loud

Whenever I’m finally back in my bedroom I love to turn it into a mini surround sound music station, simply by just turning up the volume of the hi fi set a little and let the songs play from the CD.

But my mum, being a very considerate neighbour in our neighbourhood who worries a little too much sometimes, has always been discouraging about this practice (even when it’s in the afternoon), for fear that it might cause disturbance to the people living around us (upstairs, downstairs, next door).

Actually I secretly suspect she’s the only one feeling disturbed by it. =p

Once I was playing Khalil Fong’s latest album, Orange Moon. The songs in it are more like jazz.. R&B and soul, so I thought it should be okay as it’s not like Linkin Park’s kind of loud, rock-ish, noisy metal music. And my mum was watching TV in the living room that day.

*Mum opens door during commercial break*

Mum says: Son, that’s (referring to the speakers) going to hurt your ears and make you deaf very quickly. Are you sure you still want to stick to this volume?

Des says: Yea. Don’t worry, it’s not that loud and I’m sure the neighbours won’t find it loud from where they are.

*And she closed the door.*

*A few minutes later.. Mum opens door again*

Mum says: Son, still so loud? I can even hear it in the living room. (lol, that’s not surprising at all) You sure our neighbours won’t mind?

Des says: Okay, I’ll lower the volume a little bit then.

*Lowers the volume by one level. And she closed the door.*

*A few songs later.. Mum opens door again, with a fresh new reason/excuse to convince me to lower the volume.*

Mum says: Guess what, I think I could even hear the song echo-ing even when I stuck my head out of the kitchen window (that’s really quite far from my room)! Can you believe it?

Des says: =o

Des says: Really?

That was really quite unbelievable, but I decided to go check it out anyway. If it’s true, that’s actually quite cool. That proves that my hi fi system is still very powerful, even after about 8 years. =D

And so I stuck my head out of the window, expecting to hear the music playing from my room with its door closed.

~~ Makin aku cinta… Cermin sikapmu yang mampu… Merendam rasa keakuanku… ~~

(something like that)

Des says: -_-

Des says: Mum, I don’t listen to Malay songs. And I’m not listening to rock music either. I believe that’s from our neighbour’s house.

Mum says: Oh…

Mum says: Oh…. Hmm. I think we should go complain to them instead, their music is too loud. I can even hear it in my kitchen!

Lol I think my mum should just pay attention to watching the TV. =D

Some Oscar nominated movies I’ve watched recently. I totally didn’t expect myself to watch them, but I did. Haha.

Slumdog Millionaire

Slumdog Millionaire

Why is Slumdog Millionaire one of the best movies this year?

A) It has popular good-looking actors and actresses in it.
B) Nudity. Violence. Crude language. Sex. This movie has all.
C) All the casts are Academy award winners.

D) None of the above. It has a nice story that is told well, thats all. =D

Like what Kenneth has said, this movie clearly deserves Best Picture. The exciting opening chase sequence reminded me a little of ‘City of God’s (another excellent movie) opening sequence, but the similarities end there.

The story explains how a slumdog managed to answer difficult questions from the popular gameshow ‘Who Wants to be a Millionaire’ and eventually reach the final question. The easy explanation behind this would be.. he cheated. But he didn’t. Events from his life history show how and why he knows all the answers.

The soundtrack, composed in just less than 20 days, truly complements the brilliant direction and engaging story. (I think I’m getting worse in writing reviews for movies, stop reading and go watch this movie.)

Changeling

Changeling

Angelina Jolie looks so un-Angelina here. Haha. And just by looking at the picture above I can already hear her exclaiming and crying ‘He’s not my son!! I want my son back! Where’s my son?! My son is still missing!!’

I’m serious, you’ll get to hear ‘my son!!’ repeated countless times for the first 50 minutes or so in the show. I sometimes wished she could stop saying that and used her son’s name instead (Walter, in this case).

This rather disturbing movie is about this woman who has lost her son!! after she left home for work. She filed a police report immediately and was disappointed that the police couldn’t do much to help her. A few months later, the police department found a missing child (whose name is Walter) and told her to pick him up.

However, to her horror, when she saw him she knew that he was not her son!! at all. And that sent her to a long journey to find out what really happened to her son, and how incompetent the police department was, as they frequently conveniently resorted to despicable ways to silence their ‘enemies’ (the public).

Very disturbing and heavy, but it’s quite a good movie afterall. (Directed by Clint Eastwood leh!!) Not really my type of movie though.

The Reader

The Reader

Hmm, very weird and profound movie. It’s about a boy who has an affair with a woman nearly 20 years older than him. They have sex a lot and he reads to her a lot (because she loves being read to). For full plot summary, read here.

It further explores the complexity of human morality and the lifelong repercussions that result from one’s actions. How far would you go to protect a secret?

I didn’t quite enjoy the movie, but it’s something interesting to watch.

I guess I’m lucky in that my father’s slowly going deaf, so he can barely hear the music from my system, even when it’s pretty loud.

I think I should watch Slumdog Millionaire, though… I read another review of it and it sounds pretty good. I hope they pick it.

Hahaha your mum is too funny! And on a totally unrelated note, I’m not digging Khalil’s new album. It somehow lost the pizzazz of his old albums. :S
