Ageing Population

June 21st, 2008

One of the old gentlemen in the photo below might be your uncle, or even your father. Haha.

Kranji Turf Club

Welcome to the world of Ageing Male Population, who actively engage in… gambling activities.

This place is Kranji Turf Club.

Out of curiosity, my friends and I dropped by at this very very big and secluded place in Singapore some time ago. Honestly my friends were more interested in winning some money while I was more interested to look at this place, and also watch horse racing.

But I saw more old men than horses. They were like, everywhere.

If you suffer from Androphobia, Hominophobia, or Arrhenphobia (they all mean Fear of Men), or Ochlophobia, Demophobia, or Enochlophobia (they all mean Fear of Crowds), this is hell.

Haha, my blog very educational right? You get to learn 3 different names of each phobia!

If ageing population gets too serious in the future and men still killing all the women, this is the kind of scene you will encounter when you go Orchard Road next time. Lol.

The population ratio of old men to old women was roughly 99:1.

My friends and I were probably the youngest people in that place.

Okay… Sorry for spamming this post with so many photos of old men so far. I know you are getting sick of them.

But do you think I care? Lol. Here’s more.

Kranji Turf Club

(Digress a little) Taking about old men, I found this interesting online gallery of drawings about superheroes growing old.

Old Superman

Here’s how Superman looks when he grows old! Cute huh! Lol. To see other superheroes when they grow old, click here or the picture above.

Back to turf club~

Many regular gamblers, mostly from about 40+ years old to probably 80+ years old, gather at this place every weekend to try to win some money. They may look old, but they don’t behave like their age! They are loud, quick and full of energy.

And since this is a crowded place so full of men, it’s very common to see smokers smoking everywhere (despite lots of signs reminding them not to smoke) and smelly people too.

Kranji Turf Club

There are screens inside to show you live footages of horse racing from Singapore and overseas. I loved watching the horse races, because that was the time where everyone got excited and started shouting numbers at the screen, as if their shouting could affect the results.

The horse races were very very short though, each race lasted for only as long as 3 minutes max? The rest of the time in between races (about 30 minutes) were spent analysing the different jockeys and horses, betting, going to toilet or purely waiting.

Kranji Turf Club

Since the horse racing tracks are very long and huge, it’s difficult to track where the horses really are. Even if you can, they appear very small. -_- I would rather watch the big screens.

My friends and I tried betting for a few races.

We all lost.

The betting tickets remind me of OTAS sheets I used during primary and secondary school exams. I can’t remember what OTAS stands for, but you know, it’s those sheets where you had to shade the correct option/answer, remember?

This painful lesson of losing taught us that, if we ever want to bet, we gotta do sufficient research and have more luck.

If you want to go there, do remember to bring a pen if you are going to bet! All of us didn’t bring any and had to go around borrowing all the time. Attempts to find dropped pens on the floor were futile because the uncles there really kept their pens very well!

Most/possibly all of the uncles there were armed with a pen and a guide on horse betting (it’s like their bible~).

In the end, all we could find on the floor were these!

Litter everywhere!

Kranji Turf Club

And men everywhere! They were sort of, on the floor too!

The more thrilling part of the races is when the horses are nearly reaching the end. That’s when almost everyone start getting excited and shout numbers in all kinds of languages.

4! 7! 8! 12! 1! )*&!@*(&!@(*!(*@&(*! ~~~~

Even though this is supposed to be a post about horse racing, unfortunately I didn’t get to take photos of any horses because they were galloping so fast and so far away most of the time!

So here’s a photo of a horse I took from Singapore Polo Club when I went there for a drawing trip last year.

Horse

I took a video of the shouting part, but am terribly lazy to convert the video and upload. -_- Don’t think anyone will be interested to watch either?

Lol. That’s all about my trip to Turf Club. Don’t think I will want to go there again, unless I suddenly feel like gambling or looking at old men, which are both highly unlikely.

But hey, I’m not trying to promote gambling or smoking in anyway ok! Just sharing my experience at Kranji Turf Club!

——————————————————————-

Just watched The Incredible Hulk last week, it was quite an alright show. The trailer did excite me and raise my expectations, but in the end I felt it was just okay~ Not as impressive as Iron Man.

The Incredible Hulk

I also suddenly realised that the Hulk is just a giant creature that has superhuman strength, not very unique. It can’t fly like Superman, nor fight from far range like Iron Man. So the fighting scenes, even though more satisfying than Iron Man, are just about 2 giants swinging fists towards each other. At times it even felt like a fighting game.

All in all it’s still action packed and rather cool to look at. Liv Tyler’s role (Betty Ross) seemed a bit flat, all she does in the movie is to plead her father not to kill Bruce Banner (The Hulk). There’s nothing really special about the story, but the movie is rather well-shot.

Not thatttt incredible, but still passable. =)

    LOL, not MY father :D
It’s funny to see so many older people participating in something I think is silly (gambling).

I thought the Hulk II was alright too.
