Escalators are dangerous
March 29th, 2008Saw this in an MRT station.

So that means, 5 out of 10 escalator injuries are also by passengers holding onto the handrail lah? Perhaps among the 5 passengers who hold onto the handrail, some are holding with not enough strength, some are holding with two fingers, and maybe some even hold with their foot (don’t know how that is possible though).
If you hold onto handrail, you have 50% chance of being injured. If you don’t, you have the same 50% chance of being injured too.
The best solution to prevent injuries?
Don’t use escalators at all. If you do, please wear safety helmet, knee pads, chest guard, and any other personal protective equipment that you think is necessary.

They say most statistics are made up. =P
But seriously, they do anything to employ the scare tactic, no? Too bad in this case it actually runs into a loophole, that you managed to detect!

Hey Desmond thanks for dropping by my blog. I agree with what Id has said - a lot of statistics are largely roundedup/down (depends on what trend they want to show) or even actually made up
I don’t really believe in statistics, especially learning about so many problems about it in college when we studied statistics.
Anyway usually when I ride on an escalator I will hold on to the rail and stay away from the sides (they’re notoriously known for chomping up Crocs or shoelaces)…

Yup, next time I get to the 7th floor of the mall, I will walk up the freaking stairs all my shopping bags.
These stats are so obviously fibbed. Think about it, if 8 out of 10 injuries are caused by misuse, how can 5 out of 10 be caused by not holding handrails. -___-;; That would mean 3 of the 8 who are misusing the escalators are not holding handrails either. And in that case, the 3 of the 5 who are not holding handrails are also misusing the escalators - thus for the 3 of the 5 not holding handrails were injured not by not holding handrails but by misusing the escalators. Hahahah… that was too confusing. Nevermind.
