Escalators are dangerous

March 29th, 2008

Saw this in an MRT station.

Injuries

So that means, 5 out of 10 escalator injuries are also by passengers holding onto the handrail lah? Perhaps among the 5 passengers who hold onto the handrail, some are holding with not enough strength, some are holding with two fingers, and maybe some even hold with their foot (don’t know how that is possible though).

If you hold onto handrail, you have 50% chance of being injured. If you don’t, you have the same 50% chance of being injured too.

The best solution to prevent injuries?

Don’t use escalators at all. If you do, please wear safety helmet, knee pads, chest guard, and any other personal protective equipment that you think is necessary.

Enjoy without spending a lot

March 21st, 2008

It is ultra-tempting and easy to splurge when you have a lot of time to enjoy. Yes, after many months of hard work, it is OK to splurge to reward yourself. However, not all forms of enjoyment in life require you to spend a lot of money. Many little things in life can be enjoyable and affordable too.

Here’s a few ideas:

1. Fly a kite

Kite flying

Can you see a heart-shaped cloud next to the kite?

Believe it or not, I flew a kite for the first time in my life last Saturday! =x

2. Go to the beach

Go to the beach

Have fun with the sand. Enjoy the breeze. Bring a frisbee or ball along and you can play at the beach too!

3. Take photos

Rabbit clouds

Take your camera out and start snapping beautiful images everywhere you go. You might be able to find something surprising!

Can you see an image of a rabbit and a kitten among the clouds?

4. Go to gardens

Chinese Gardens

Chinese Gardens

Experience the tranquillity at Chinese Garden, or Japanese Garden, and forget that you are in Singapore. Haha.

5. Explore a school

Laselle

Avoid the crowds and pollution in town, and go explore somewhere where no one will want to go during weekends. One school worth exploring would be Lasalle! This place is like a maze! You can feast your eyes with the artworks done by their students too.

6. Explore your country like a tourist

Old buildings

Admire the beautifully restored old buildings in town, talk to the people and understand a little more about the history and life in Singapore. Sample everything. Who needs the history textbook?

7. Read books in your favourite bookstore

Kinokuniya

Read about fantasy tales, teenage love stories, or even self-improvement advices all under one roof. Best of all, the books are (usually) in their best condition!

8. Visit a museum

Museum

Look out for exhibitions or festivals that offer free or cheap admission. By the way, the toilets at National Museum of Singapore are pretty clean!

9. Go to Mount Faber

Spectacular view at Mount Faber

If you can’t afford to spend $30 to be stuck in the Singapore Flyer capsule for 30 minutes, this one is a great alternative. At the top of Mount Faber, you can enjoy breathtaking view too!

10. Window shopping

Window shopping

That’s the most relevant picture I have for window shopping, haha. Anyway, window shopping can be highly dangerous for some. To make sure you don’t spend money on things you don’t need, you can leave you ATM card at home, and bring very little cash along.

Daiso is one very dangerous place to window shop because everything is so cheap!

Explore your favourite stores. Try stuff on. Make fun of everything. Have fun!

11. Learn origami

Origami penguins

Get some used paper, or buy a cheap packet of origami papers and start learning! The internet offers a lot of great graphic and video tutorials. This can definitely test and train your patience, and perhaps can be great idea for simple gifts!

12. Visit a toy store

Toys

Have a lot of fun with toys. Play like a kid. Take stupid pictures. But don’t break anything, those toys aren’t yours. Lol. My favourite toy store would be ‘The Better Toy Store’ at Ngee Ann City!

You can probably come up with a lot of better ideas. Be creative and try everything!

Real fun shouldn’t cost a lot. =)

Recently I’ve watched 2 movies.

Horton

Horton

A decent animated movie about an elephant, Horton, who accidentally discovers the Whos, who happen to live on a speck.

The animation quality is great, I love all the curvy and snappy movements. The visuals are very colourful and vibrant too. The story itself is very simple, and the humour is quite alright.

A pretty okay entertainment for both kids and adults.

Sky of Love

Sky of Love

One of the most romantic and sweetest movies I’ve seen recently. The movie is pretty long too, as it takes its own sweet time to slowly tell the story.

Definitely reminds people of their first love.

At one point, I even cried! That’s really great achievement for me, because I don’t cry very easily. Or is it because I’m less cold-blooded nowadays? Lol.
