Do you worry?

November 21st, 2007

We were discussing about ‘worry’ during our Art and Design History class today (my most most most most most favourite class of the week!). Everyone had to give a short answer on ‘why do I worry‘, and ‘what do I worry‘.

Then I realised that at that point of time, I… wasn’t worrying. The rest of the class was mostly worrying about the same assignment they all didn’t put in enough effort. Haha.

I don’t dislike worrying. I don’t think it’s a bad thing. I don’t try very hard to avoid worrying either. Some of my friends were probably surprised that I don’t worry.

When I really do my work and enjoy doing it, I put 100% of my energy and focus on it. When I get distracted, I’m 100% distracted. I can only do one thing at a time. I see worry during work as a distraction. It’s like doing this thing and thinking about another thing, not being in the moment.

Worrying is not an entirely bad thing nor good thing. Some say it’s necessary so that we can ‘predict’ and get ready for upcoming problems. Some say it’s a waste of time. Some say doing it excessively is bad. Well, doing anything excessively is never really a good thing too, isn’t it?

Worry can either make you sit there and do nothing but worry for hours, or push you to start taking action so that you don’t worry anymore.

Even though we usually tell people ‘Don’t Worry, Be Happy’, the fact is, most people still worry.

“Will I be able to finish this assignment? What if I don’t?”

“Is my pimple going to grow bigger? How am I going to meet people?!”

“My drawing skills is so lousy, how am I going to survive in this industry? There are so many better people around!”

It’s okay to worry, but it’s important that after spending a little time to worry, we should start taking action to find out what we are worrying about, why and how to solve the ‘problem’ that is making us worry. It’s that simple huh?

I’m simplifying things here, but things are usually quite simple. Many of us just like to complicate things and make our lives miserable, no? Perhaps that is human nature.

So why do I not worry? Uhh.. I have no idea. I just don’t. Perhaps I’m not a person who has this habit.

One good way, perhaps, to stop that worry at the back of your head, is to live in the moment. Here’s a few ways:

  1. Close your eyes, breathe. Stop thinking. Just concentrate on breathing. Carefully smell what you are breathing in, and hear your breathing sound. Being able to stay alive and breathe is really wonderful! No?
  2. When you are eating, don’t just gobble and try to finish the food fast. Pay attention to the taste. Slowly chew it. If possible, try to guess the ingredients of the food that you are having. Enjoy your food!
  3. When you walk back home from work or school alone, don’t just plug in to your MP3 player and keep looking at your handphone. Unplug. Keep your handphone. Start looking around and observe your surroundings. Listen to what people are talking about. Listen to the sounds that only you can hear at that time. Help an old lady pick up her fruit if necessary. Haha.

I see worrying as thinking about the future or past. Hmm, maybe mostly future. I think it’s a great pity to constantly think about the future and waste the wonderful ‘present’.

Stop unnecessary worrying, and start living.

Stardust

Stardust

Recently, I just watched a great movie called Stardust!

Seriously, it’s so good that, at one point, it made me (a cold blooded animal like me) choke to tears! It’s the first movie since King Kong that made me feel like crying.

Go catch it while it’s still showing! It’s a nice blend of comedy, action, fantasy, romance and adventure.
